Highlights

Day 1 Explore the elegance of Kumamoto — where tradition and history meet.

Your journey begins in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, home to the historic Ueno Kiln—once the official kiln of the Hosokawa clan, with over 400 years of legacy. Here, you will encounter the rare and refined art of zogan (inlay) ceramics, a technique seldom seen in pottery.
On board, you may choose from a selection of curated experiences, including hands-on crafting of Higo Zogan metal inlay—a tradition rooted in samurai culture. Each plan offers a unique perspective on Kumamoto’s rich history and enduring craftsmanship.

Yatsushiro (Koda) ware

Yatsushiro (Koda) ware, a traditional ceramic style with over 400 years of history, was founded by Ueno Kizo (Sonkai), who was invite d by Hosokawa Tadaoki—one of the Seven Disciples of Sen no Rikyu, the revered tea master who shaped the aesthetics of chanoyu (the Japanese tea ceremony). For generations, it served exclusively as the official kiln of the Hosokawa domain, producing ceramics solely for the clan.
Its distinctive zogan (inlay) patterns, preserved to this day, are based on original design instructions issued by the Hosokawa family.
As part of this exclusive excursion, you will be welcomed into the Ueno Kiln—the head family of Yatsushiro (Koda) ware—for a rare, behind-the-scenes experience. Normally closed to the public, the workshop opens its doors to Seven Stars guests, offering a firsthand look at the refined and time-honored art of inlay ceramics.

Amano-Iwato Shrine - A Visit to the Sacred Sites of Japanese Mythology

Takachiho is the legendary setting of Japan’s ancient myths, as recorded in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) and Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan)—Japan’s oldest historical texts compiled in the 8th century. These works form the foundation of Shinto beliefs and tell the stories of gods, creation, and the origins of the Japanese imperial line.
You will be guided on a formal visit to Amano-Iwato Shrine East, believed to be the dwelling place of the sun goddess Amaterasu. At Amano-Iwato Shrine West, where the sacred cave is enshrined, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about these myths through a special encounter with the shrine’s priest.
This experience offers a rare glimpse into Japan’s spiritual heritage and the timeless stories that continue to shape its culture.

Day 3 From Takachiho to Aso: Discovering Ancient Stories Etched in the Land

On the third day, the journey continues to Aso, a region that symbolizes the origins of Kyushu’s nature and culture. As you take in the sweeping views of the Aso landscape, shaped by ancient volcanic forces, you’ll witness the quiet strength of the people who have lived in harmony with this land for over a thousand years. En route from Takachiho, local guides will share insights into the Aso Caldera, its volcanic history, and the blessings brought by its fertile terrain. Surrounded by the mystery and beauty of nature, this journey offers a moment to reflect on the deep connection between the earth and human life—a rich and restorative experience for both heart and mind.

Aso Panorama Guide

From the mythical land of Takachiho, you will travel by Seven Stars bus toward Aso Station. As you approach the outer rim of the Aso Caldera, a new and striking face of Kyushu begins to unfold.
In Minami Aso, home to Shirakawa Spring — where 60 tons of water gush forth every minute — you will pass through serene countryside sustained by abundant spring water. Gradually, the majestic ridgelines of Mount Aso come into view.
As the elevation rises, sweeping views of the caldera and Aso’s vast grasslands open up below. You will learn about the centuries-old practice of grassland management, a tradition recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.
Approaching the crater, you will feel the powerful presence of the active volcano that once shaped the dramatic columnar cliffs of Takachiho Gorge.
From your window, you will gaze out at Kusasenri, a vast volcanic plain nestled within the caldera. This scenic grassland, formed by ancient eruptions, is known for its tranquil beauty — where grazing horses roam freely and seasonal wildflowers bloom across the open fields. Kusasenri offers a striking contrast to the nearby smoking crater, embodying the harmony between nature’s raw power and the peaceful rhythms of rural life.
This is a time for you to quietly take in the grandeur of nature and reflect on the timeless connection between the land and those who live upon it.

Tateno Station & the Historic Switchback

Tateno Station is home to one of Japan’s rare three-stage switchback systems, designed to help trains climb the steep slopes of Aso’s outer rim. This ingenious zigzag method was introduced over a century ago to overcome the region’s dramatic terrain, and it remains a symbol of Japan’s railway engineering excellence. The station sits at the base of the Aso outer rim, offering breathtaking views of the Aso Caldera from the train windows. It’s a place where history, technology, and nature come together in harmony—an unforgettable experience for railway enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Day 4 Wrapped in Sacred Moments — A Graceful Finale from Usa to Hakata

On the final day, you will visit Usa Jingu, the head shrine of over 40,000 Hachiman shrines across Japan. With a history of over 1,300 years, Usa Jingu is also the birthplace of Shinbutsu Shugo—the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism that shaped Japan’s spiritual landscape.
Within the serene grounds, you will be guided through a special visit led by a Shinto priest, offering rare access to National Treasures and sacred rituals. This deeply spiritual experience invites quiet reflection and a sense of reverence, as you are gently embraced by the sacred atmosphere.
Afterward, the journey continues along the verdant Kyudai Main Line, heading toward Hakata—the final destination of this enriching four-day voyage.

This solemn and sacred atmosphere offers a deeply moving experience.
